- Concussion Screening
- On April 30, 2016, Dr. Alex Elkins and Dr. Denise Pouncey (Assistant Professors/Audiologists) screened 16 Lanier High School football players. The screening of the IMPACT Test and computerized Dynamic Posturography test.
- Baseline Concussion data were obtained and stored under their MR number. The players and thier parents were given information on concussions and an information sheet about contacting their office to obtain post-concussion test within 36-72 hours following the concussion. Post-concussion repeat testing can help verify that a consussion has occurred, and can help the managing physician in making decisions regarding return to play.
- Hearing Screening
- In April 2016 Dr. Denise Pouncey and Dr. Mary Frances Johnson, along with two Audiology graduate externs, attended the community-health fari at Lanier High School that was hosted by the UMMC nursing students. Hearing screening were performed and information provided on safe-listening levels.
- On May 5, 2016. Dr. Mary Frances Johnson attended the after-school band practice for the Lanier High School Beginner Band. Information was presented to teh students regarding the dangers of over-exposure to loud noises, possibilities of music-induces hearing losss, and options for hearing protections.
- The UMMC Division of Audiology is participating in teh ETY-motic Adopt-a-Band project and has "adopted" the Lanier High School marching band.
- Musicians' hearing protection was purchased for the 30-member marching band and was distributed on May 5, 2016. Additional educational materials were provided to the band director, Mr. Michael Wynn.
